At the prestigious Art Jakarta event, held from October 4-6, 2024 at JIExpo Kemayoran, Smeg Indonesia took center stage by presenting an extraordinary work of art that bridged the worlds of Italian fashion, design, and fine art. Known for its dedication to nurturing Southeast Asia’s contemporary art scene, Art Jakarta remains a vibrant platform for visionaries and creators from across the region. This year, the event witnessed the unveiling of a rare treasure: the Heroes of Sicily, an artistic marvel from the prestigious collaboration between Smeg and Dolce & Gabbana.
The collaboration, called Frigorifero d’arte or Refrigerators of Art, reimagines the iconic SMEG FAB28 refrigerator as a canvas, with each of the 100 limited-edition pieces intricately hand-painted, bringing to life a captivating tale of Italian culture. Only four of these extraordinary creations remain available worldwide, and Smeg Indonesia had the distinct privilege of presenting one of these masterpieces—Heroes of Sicily—at this esteemed art fair.
Crafted by Dolce & Gabbana painter Alice Valenti, Heroes of Sicily is a visual ode to the colorful carriages of eastern Sicily, imbued with rich, evocative hues of red and intricate spiral motifs, and adorned with legendary French knights called Paladins. On the right side, the English knight Orlando stands proudly, cloaked in red, with a helmet crowned by eagles. The left side reveals Rinaldo di Montalbano, a celebrated French knight, depicted in a regal green cloak with a helmet adorned by lions. At the heart of the design, the figure of Saint George emerges, his legend of dragon-slaying a timeless symbol of courage and protection, while delicate florals grace the top, softening the grandeur with nature’s beauty.
Each angle of this artistic creation weaves a story, transforming the refrigerator into a living narrative—an heirloom of history, myth, and artistic expression. Its presence at Art Jakarta mesmerized collectors and art connoisseurs, capturing the delicate interplay of form and function.
